"Class Rings Returned after 38 Years       November 23rd, 2013

lost rings

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB) – It’s a story 38 years in the making. Two class rings — lost nearly 4 decades ago — were returned to their owners in Chicopee Saturday afternoon.

They were found off the coast of Cape Cod, by a stranger just enjoying his hobby.

Gail St. George was swimming at Sea Street beach in Dennis in the Summer of 1975, wearing her class ring and her boyfriend’s. But both were swept away by a wave.

“I mean, I never, in a million years, would have imagine they would have been found, and together, 38 years later,” said St. George.

Rick Browne is the man responsible for finding those rings. He’s a metal detector hobbyist living on Cape Cod, who puts in about 500 hours searching the ocean floor a year.

“These two rings evidently stayed together, and they moved out away from the shore, probably 50 to 75 feet.,” said Browne of the two rings.

Browne was able to track St. George down, using the initials inscribed on the inside of the ring. He Gail’s high school, and matched her initials and graduation year to her name. When Browne reached out to her, St. George mentioned she had also lost her boyfriend’s ring. After answering a few questions, the two determined Browne had also found the second ring.

St. George’s brother was still in touch with her one-time sweetheart, Martin Costello, and let him know the ring had been found.

“I was still kind of ‘Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, but as soon as I saw the damages that were on there. It wasn’t from the ocean. It was something I’d done. That’s why I stopped wearing it. And here is it. It’s the ring,” Martin Costello said.

Browne uses a wide variety of equipment to search the waters, and will wade into water as high as five feet deep in the hopes of coming across a special find.

“The rings mean so much more to the people than they do to me. The instant that I find them, it’s the greatest thing in the world, but you know, getting them back, it’s seeing the faces and bring people together,” notes Browne.

“The ring, the story, that part’s not that important. It was nice to see Gail again, to see that she has Mark, a great guy, and the kids,” Costello said.

Browne says all he asks for after returning found items are thank you notes, so that he can reflect on them when he’s no longer able to search the sea.

December Member Hunt

"Had a great day out at Woods Hole, Stoney Beach and Taft Park with Joe Q, M.J., Rick B. and his Long time hunting buddy Dick, Bob St O, Rick B, Brian R and his old friend Ali, and Myself. Rick and Dick both found Gold Rings and everyone got some coins and the usual trash. I found some coins and what is appearing to be some kind of Silver bracelet. I used my electrolisis kit I made up according to Rick's instruction sheet and I was pleasantly surprised at the results. I only kept it in the solution for about a minute and a half.
Thanks to everyone who went for another great day out with the club members. Bob St O got his just due great Eclair deserts. We had another really good lunch at a Slice of Italy." Tom Smith - GTHC Huntmaster

November Member Hunt

"Well we had a good time gettin' out together and giving it a go at the Cole property in Carver. Seven of us checked a section of the over 200 acres of public land.  The group of seven Bob St O, Rick B, Brian R, Kevin N, MJ, Paul C, and myself worked for about 2-1/2 hrs. finding Iron wedges, bullets, shell casings with Brian being Tagged  "the AXEMAN" as he found his second axe head on the property.  It threatened to rain but we were lucky it just stayed cloudy and no one had any problems with the weather.  We did get a serious workout by putting on some serious mileage around the grounds and we haven't even come close to seeing all of it.  The site is not to be taken lightly as anyone there will tell you. The Boy Scout Main camping sights have yet to be discovered but I'm confident some of us will be going back again to take some other new path in search of more treasure in the woods of Carver.  I had a really good day and thank all who came and made it a fun hunt." Tom Smith, GTHC Huntmaster

Below are some comments from members.

"Although I don't take part in the hunts in the woods it's nice to see you getting together to hunt and it's nice that we have a club that's much more active than before..." Steve Z

October Speaker  Rick Browne

Rick Browne gave a demonstration on Electrolysis.  He covered how to make your own unit and demonstrated how the process works, how long to leave items in the solution, and what not to do.  Rick took questions and passed around show and tell items.

Big thank you to Rick for taking the time to explain the process and answer questions.

Rick's hand out can be found on the "Forms" page on our website and Facebook Group page.

October Club Seeded Hunt

GTHC held a seeded hunt on October 20, 2013 for current members & family. Twenty-one members(21) attended searching the sands of Shell Point Beach in Onset for $300.00 in coins ranging from nickels to dollar pieces. The weather was perfect for doing some metal detecting.

$282.30 has been accounted for, a few people did not count their finds, so it sounds like we did a good job locating those targets!

Below are some comments from members who attended the hunt.
